1. At BioMarin they work on finding cell-based cures for rare genetic diseases.
2. BioMarin is targeting the rare genetic diseases that have a low life-expectancy in their patients.
3. I learned about how Bioreactors create the right living conditions to grow cells, how laminar flow hoods keep dust and bacteria out of the cells, how they use chinese hamster ovary cells (or CHO cells) to read DNA and produce healthy proteins efficiently, and how autoclaves are used to sterilize the cell samples and kill bacteria. I also learned about an HPLC which is a high pressure liquid chromatography, and separates cells and proteins that aren't meant to be in the drugs, and spectrophotometers which send wavelengths into the drugs to see if they have been purified.
4. The bioreactors were the most interesting part of the tour to me.
5. I would like to learn more about the growth and regulation of growth of cells.
