In this lab, we learned about the arthropod's physical anatomy and its internal anatomy. We looked at the grasshopper's wings and took it off to observe its designs in a microscope. We also observed its legs and how different the jumping legs were from the front legs. The outside of the grasshopper was layered with a hard exoskeleton. Inside of the grasshopper were smooth and delicate organs that needed to be protected by the exoskeleton.
Ecology
Grasshoppers eat vegetation, but some eat animal tissue as well. They lay their eggs near food plants in the summer. Some eggs may be glued together depending on the species. Grasshoppers are eaten by some insects, birds, and small mammals. They are affected by diseases from bacteria and fungi. Some evolved defenses include camouflage, mimicking of the environment, and toxicity.
