In this lab, we observed the structures of the jellyfish. It was easy to look at because it's transparent. The only cutting we did was to cut off its tentacles. This lab focused on the uses of microscopes.
Jellyfish are under the phylum Cnidaria. They have radial symmetry and have no organ-filled body cavity. Its respiratory system worked by diffusion, and its circulatory system worked similar to that of a sponge– except this time the jellyfish has a lining of cilia to help move the fluids. Unlike the sponge, organisms in the phylum Cnidaria have a nervous system that, although is very limited, can at least stimulate it.
Ecology
Jellyfish are carnivorous, and feed on small animals, which includes other jellyfish. As they swim, they displace water, sucking in any possible prey into the reach of their tentacles. They are preyed upon by creatures such as tuna, sharks, swordfish, and sea turtles. Jellyfish are usually found in swarms or "blooms" when they drift together on currents. Jellyfish populations are growing because their predators are being hunted, and there are excessive nutrients in the water. Few species of jellyfish also inhabit freshwater.
